Heartmoves is an exercise program developed by the Heart Foundation for people wishing to exercise at a low to moderate intensity. It is designed to be safe and appropriate for people with stable chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol or obesity.
The focus of the 45 minute classes is cardiovascular fitness, strength, mobility and balance. Chairs will be provided for clients needing to sit to exercise or stand with support. People who need walking sticks or walkers are welcome and able to participate.
All participants must complete a PEAR Form (Pre-exercise Assessment & Referral) available from the Community Health Centre, before being able to participate in a class and you may need your doctor to sign the medical clearance.
Heartmoves classes are held each week on Wednesdays at 11.30am, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm. For costs and bookings please call Community Health Centre Reception on 5683 9780.
Results of recent surveys of current and past participants showed that since starting Heartmoves 100% have noticed an improvement in balance and leg strength, 92% reported improved coordination and that they practice Heartmoves exercises at home on a regular basis and 83% would attend more Heartmoves classes if they were available.
Just some of the comments, reasons and outcomes from clients who come to Heartmoves include:
‘Guaranteed improved, up and down stairs. Before the classes I was frightened to try – to see what I could do’
‘Balance a lot better when gardening’
‘Walking further with the dog’
‘Manage to walk/shop without too much discomfort’
‘Company & exercise, enjoyment and doing things that I didn’t think I could manage’
‘To lose weight and improve fitness’
