By using your private health insurance for your stay at South Gippsland Hospital, you are assisting the hospital to purchase equipment and maintain facilities as well as contributing to the further education of health care staff. Patients with private health insurance have the choice to be treated as either a public or private patient.
Before you are admitted, you will be required to make a decision regarding your classification status. You will be classified as one of the following:
- Public patient
- Private patient
- Veterans’ Affairs patient
- Overseas visitor

What are the benefits of using your health insurance?
- You will have no out-of-pocket expenses.
- You will not receive any bills. If you do happen to receive a bill, send it to the hospital in the envelope provided.
- Your ambulance costs will be covered if you are transferred to another public hospital.
If your health fund has an excess, the hospital will cover the amount to $500.
X-Ray, Radiology and Pathology
No costs will be incurred for these services.
